Washington, D.C., Dec. 12, 2018 — Following passage in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, the American Public Health Association expressed its support for the final 2018 Farm Bill. APHA applauded the bipartisan, bicameral efforts of congressional champions for their tireless efforts to pass a bill that protects the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and maintains important conservation programs that strengthen public health.
Georges Benjamin, MD, executive director of APHA, said, “We appreciate the bipartisan and measured approach to this legislation. Supporting evidence-based public health policy over ideology and protecting and strengthening SNAP is the right choice for public health.”
The bill will also advance public health by encouraging healthy eating and maintaining programs like the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program and SNAP-Ed, and improving the economy by supporting local farmers and local retailers who expand access to healthy food in our communities. APHA is also pleased that the conference agreement rejected provisions that would have exposed Americans to greater amounts of pesticides as well as efforts to eliminate the Conservation Stewardship Program.
Benjamin added, “There is always more we can do to reduce hunger and support better nutrition, but this bill is a step in the right direction. APHA looks forward to working with Congress to build upon this progress, and we urge the president to sign this legislation as soon as possible.”
